Cosmelan® Depigmentation Programme

The world’s leading professional depigmentation treatment

An advanced programme designed to treat moderate to severe pigmentation, melasma, and uneven skin tone through long-term regulation of pigment production within the skin.

What is Cosmelan®?

Cosmelan® is internationally recognised as one of the most advanced and effective professional depigmentation protocols available.

Unlike traditional brightening treatments, Cosmelan® works by targeting the underlying mechanisms responsible for excess pigment production, allowing us to both correct existing pigmentation and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

The treatment combines an intensive professional in-clinic phase with a highly structured homecare protocol, allowing continuous regulation of pigment formation over several months.

This multi-phase approach is what makes Cosmelan® particularly effective for complex and treatment-resistant pigmentation concerns, including melasma.

  • Cosmelan® works by inhibiting tyrosinase activity, one of the key enzymes involved in melanogenesis, the process responsible for melanin production within the skin.

At the same time, the protocol accelerates controlled epidermal renewal, helping accumulated pigment gradually disperse while improving overall skin clarity and uniformity.

The treatment also helps to regulate inflammatory activity within the skin, which is particularly important in conditions such as melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Because pigmentation is biologically complex and often recurrent in nature, this ongoing regulation phase is essential in achieving stable, long-term improvement.

  • Many pigmentation treatments focus only on removing visible pigment from the surface of the skin.

While this can create temporary improvement, it often fails to address the ongoing stimulation occurring within melanocytes, meaning pigmentation frequently returns.

Cosmelan® is different because it works as a full depigmentation programme rather than a single treatment.

By continuously regulating melanin production over time, we are able to achieve a more controlled, progressive, and long-lasting improvement in pigmentation.

    • Melasma
One of the most difficult forms of pigmentation to manage due to its hormonal and inflammatory component.

    • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
Pigmentation left following acne, inflammation, or skin trauma.

    • Sun damage & diffuse pigmentation
Uneven pigment caused by cumulative UV exposure.

    • Uneven skin tone
Improves overall clarity, brightness, and skin uniformity.

    • Treatment-resistant pigmentation
Suitable for pigmentation concerns that have not responded to previous treatment approaches.

The Cosmelan® protocol

Phase one

Skin preparation

Preparation is an essential part of the Cosmelan® process and plays a significant role in both safety and overall treatment outcome.

Prior to the in-clinic treatment, patients begin a prescribed homecare routine designed to prepare the skin, regulate inflammation, strengthen barrier function, and improve how the skin responds to the depigmentation phase.

This stage helps to create a more controlled treatment environment and reduce the risk of unnecessary irritation or post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Proper preparation is absolutely essential, particularly when treating complex pigmentation conditions such as melasma.

Phase two

Intensive in-clinic depigmentation

The professional application is performed in clinic and typically takes around 30–45 minutes.

During this appointment, the Cosmelan® mask is carefully applied to the skin following detailed assessment and preparation.

Patients then return home with the mask in place, where it remains on the skin for approximately 8 hours before removal at home, following practitioner instructions.

This phase initiates the intensive depigmentation process and begins regulating excess melanocyte activity within the skin.

Phase three

Ongoing home regulation

The homecare phase is one of the most important parts of the entire Cosmelan® protocol.

Without consistent adherence to the prescribed homecare, optimal results cannot be achieved or maintained.

Following the in-clinic treatment, patients continue with a structured programme of professional products designed to continuously regulate melanin production, control inflammation, support skin recovery, and maintain progressive pigment improvement over time.

This phase continues for several months and is what allows Cosmelan® to achieve more stable and long-term results compared to superficial pigmentation treatments alone.

Throughout the process, patients are invited back into clinic for regular review appointments, allowing us to monitor skin response closely, adjust the protocol where required, and support the skin throughout each stage of treatment and recovery.

This ongoing supervision is a key part of achieving safe, controlled, and successful pigmentation correction.

client journey

Amanda came us to struggling with a severely compromised skin barrier, persistent acne, post-acne scarring, and pigmentation.

After an in-depth consultation, we agreed that achieving lasting skin transformation would take time, consistency, and trust.

Together, we created a phased evidence-based treatment plan carefully tailored to Amanda’s unique skin concerns.

Transformation through consistency

Amanda’s transformation is a strong example of what can be achieved through consistency, patience, and trust in the treatment process.

Successful pigmentation correction relies on far more than one treatment alone. Consistency with homecare, regular treatments, sun protection, and lifestyle management all play an important role in achieving long-term improvement.

By following a structured and medically guided approach, we are able to create healthier, more stable skin and more controlled, long-lasting results over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Cosmelan® is designed to treat pigmentation through long-term regulation of melanin production within the skin, rather than simply removing surface pigment temporarily.

This is what makes it particularly effective for more complex and recurrent pigmentation concerns such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

  • Yes. Cosmelan® is an intensive depigmentation treatment and visible downtime should absolutely be expected as part of the process.

Immediately following treatment, the skin commonly feels tight, warm, and sensitive, with redness typically developing within the first 24–48 hours.

Over the first week, most patients experience varying degrees of dryness, flaking, and visible peeling as the skin undergoes controlled renewal and pigment begins dispersing more rapidly.

During this stage, the skin can temporarily appear more inflamed, reactive, or darker before improvement begins to develop, which is a normal and expected part of the treatment process.

By weeks 2–4, the skin generally begins to feel calmer and healthier overall, with early improvement in skin clarity and uniformity becoming more noticeable.

Pigmentation correction then continues progressively over the following months as the homecare phase regulates melanin production within the skin.

Downtime and recovery vary between individuals depending on skin sensitivity, pigment severity, inflammation levels, and adherence to the prescribed aftercare and homecare protocol.

Throughout the process, we closely monitor skin response through regular review appointments to ensure the skin remains supported and the treatment progresses safely and effectively.

  • Preparation is a critical part of the Cosmelan® protocol and helps ensure the skin is healthy, balanced, and ready for treatment.

Prior to your in-clinic treatment, you will begin a structured homecare routine consisting of four professional products designed to prepare the skin, regulate inflammation, improve skin tolerance, and begin controlling pigment activity before the intensive depigmentation phase.

    Brightening Foam

A gentle resurfacing cleanser designed to remove excess oil, impurities, and dead skin build-up while encouraging smoother and more consistent skin renewal.

This helps improve skin clarity and allows the skin to respond more effectively throughout the treatment process.

    Brightening Concentrate

A targeted depigmenting serum formulated to begin regulating excess melanin production within the skin.

It works to gradually reduce visible pigmentation activity while helping to improve overall skin brightness and uniformity.

    Melan Tran3x Gel Cream

An advanced pigment-regulating moisturiser designed to help suppress the pathways involved in ongoing pigmentation formation.

It also helps to calm inflammation within the skin, which is particularly important in conditions such as melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

    Melan 130+ Pigment Control SPF

Daily sun protection is absolutely essential throughout the Cosmelan® process.

Melan 130+ provides very high broad-spectrum protection against UV exposure and visible light, both of which are major triggers for pigmentation recurrence.

Protecting the skin properly is one of the most important parts of achieving and maintaining successful long-term results.

  • Cosmelan® is most suitable for patients experiencing moderate to severe pigmentation concerns, particularly where pigmentation has become persistent, widespread, or difficult to manage with standard treatments alone.

It is commonly recommended for melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation, sun damage, uneven skin tone, and pigmentation that repeatedly returns despite previous treatment attempts.

The treatment is particularly beneficial for patients looking for a more structured and medically guided approach to pigmentation correction rather than temporary brightening treatments.

Suitability is always assessed carefully during consultation, as factors such as skin sensitivity, inflammation levels, skin type, previous treatments, and lifestyle can all influence how the skin responds throughout the protocol.

  • Pigmentation treatment is not simply about making the skin lighter — it is about controlling a highly reactive process within the skin safely and correctly.

Over-treating the skin, damaging the barrier, or creating excessive inflammation can often worsen pigmentation rather than improve it, particularly in patients prone to melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

For this reason, we take a far more controlled and medically considered approach throughout every stage of the protocol, from preparation and treatment planning through to recovery and long-term maintenance.

Our focus is always on creating stable, healthy skin first, allowing us to achieve safer, more consistent, and more sustainable results over time.

  • Cosmelan® is not designed as a one-day pigmentation treatment. It is a long-term depigmentation programme focused on progressively regulating how the skin produces pigment over time.

The in-clinic treatment itself is only one stage of the overall process.

The real transformation develops gradually through months of controlled homecare, ongoing pigment regulation, inflammation management, SPF protection, and regular clinical review.

This is why patient consistency and commitment play such a significant role in the overall outcome and longevity of results.
